Texas A&M Football Schedule, the Texas A&M football team represents the Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas in NCAA Division I FBS football and is the intercollegiate home football program of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The team competes in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and is a member of the Big 12 Conference. Known as the Aggies, their sole major rival is the University of Houston. The college football team holds a strong tradition. They were charter members of the Southwest Conference in 1915 and stayed there until 1995 when they joined with eight other schools to form the Big 12 Conference. The team plays its home games at Kyle Field, a 106-year old stadium built in 1923. It is one where more than 60-thousand people can see them play on average. With such a small population, they have no fans to cheer them on but their loyal followers who are called “Gig’em” or “Aggie War Hogs” that are known to be very passionate about their sport and their school as well. To date, there have been 71 players that have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame for their great contributions to this great game; some being starters and some being All-Americans and even Heisman Trophy winners. Running Backs
The Texas A&M Aggies run-back offense is known for their running backs. They hold the record for the most rushing yards in a single season with 3,308 yards in 1998, which was also a school-record. With all the great running backs that have played for the Aggies, there have been some that have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. The first was John David Crow who is considered to be the grandfather of the Texas A&M Aggies. He played for the team from 1924 to 1926. He was the first player from a Texas high school to go to the University of Texas. During his time at Texas A&M, he was known for his ability to make cuts on a dime. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954. The next in line was running back Billy Vessels. He was born in 1936 and attended Texas A&M from 1954 to 1955. He was known by his teammates as “Booger” because of his love for chewing on gum. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1991. The Aggies have had other great running backs too such as Matt “Moose” Jones, the all-time leader in rushing yards, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1988; and the great Ricky Williams who won the Heisman Trophy in 1998.
Quarterbacks
The Texas A&M Aggies signal-callers are known for their ability to make plays both with their arm and their legs. In the past, they have had future NFL signal-callers including a Heisman Trophy winner and a Mr. New Mexico Super Bowl quarterback. Their current quarterback is Kyle Allen who was a consensus All-American in 2016. He was ranked fifth in the country in passing efficiency and was averaging 327 yards per game. He has a great pair of receivers too in Johnathan McCant and Uzoma “Luke” Williams, who was an All-American his senior year in 2016. The Aggies have had other quarterbacks before as well such as Kenny Kingsbury who led them to a Southwest Conference Championship in 1975 and won the Walter Payton Award that is given to the top offensive player in the country in 1983.
Wide Receivers
The Texas A&M Aggies wide receivers are known for their ability to make big plays both on and off the field. There have been many great receivers to come out of the program such as Aray Birk, the 2011 and 2012 All-American and the 2011 Southwest Conference Offensive Player of the Year. He was also the Offensive MVP in the 2012 New Mexico Bowl. The Aggies have had other great receivers such as Richard “Dick” Wilson who was a first-team All-American and set a school record for most career receptions with 153 and receiving yards with 2,564. Another great receiver was Reggie Pool who was a first-team All-American in 1975 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1991.
Tight Ends and Solidified Offensive Linemen
The Texas A&M Aggies tight ends are known for their ability to block and catch the ball. There have been many great ones to play for the program including a pro-bowler and the all-time leader in touchdown receptions. Their current tight end is Jace Sternberger who was a first-team All-American in 2016 and a Mr. New Mexico Super Bowl quarterback in 2013. He was also a Mr. New Mexico Super Bowl athlete in 2015.
